Issue 3 - 14 March, 2008

Welcome to the third issue of GlobalCCU News, produced in the lead up to the 2008 GlobalCCU Forum, the first truly global event on Corporate Universities and Corporate Responsibility (CSR, Sustainable Development, Diversity Management…). This seminar supported by the United Nations Global Compact will bring together organisations and speakers from five continents. In this issue, we briefly look at the theme of Corporate Responsibility as a Leadership Tool. It is a taster of what you can expect to learn from this exceptional seminar – there is still time to register.
Feel free to contact us by email with any comments or questions you may have (michelle.leynaud@globalccu.com).

For Annick Renaud-Coulon, president of GlobalCCU, Corporate Responsibility as a leadership tool needs to be conceived through a very innovative business case.

“There’s a new way of seeing things, a new way of governance and, of course, of leadership and management. And this cannot be achieved without help. This is where the corporate university comes into play.”
says Annick
Renaud-Coulon

“ A lot of multinational companies are now strongly involved in Corporate Citizenship or Corporate Responsibility, but they often set apart their efforts in their field rather than link them with their learning policy. Therefore it is time to bring together these two subjects and bring together the silos that unfortunately exist within today’s organisations. Directors of education and sustainable development, social responsibility, diversity management need to work together; in order to ensure that corporate responsibility becomes a true leadership tool. Companies need to review the sponsorship of competencies and the donation economy, as well as the relationship between NGOs, rating agencies, and international government institutions. There’s a new way of seeing things, a new way of governance and, of course, of leadership and management. And this cannot be achieved without help. This is where the corporate university comes into play—it can help managers understand the local and distant environments in which the company operates, and acquire new competencies, and define and implement a new strategic agenda for their organization. I look forward to sharing the full business case throughout the three days of the 2008 GlobalCCU Forum. ”

Social responsibility as a management tool

At the end of last year, we summarised the meaning of our action for 2008 as follows: "Sustainable and profitable development in a socially responsible group."

The reference to social responsibility in our policy is, for our group, self evident. Since its creation at the end of the 19th century by the agricultural milieu, Groupama, as it accompanied all the socio-economic changes, developed three action principles: proximity, solidarity and, as it happens, responsibility. With these three principles as the foundation of its identity, the Group applies its social commitment as an insurer, a professional agriculture organisation and an employer. It proposes a social and human project supported by a long-term economic project. With the rapid development of our societies, social responsibility takes on new dimensions. Diversity, equal opportunity, ethics, sustainable development, mecennat. These are new territories that bring managers to expand their vision, rethink the conditions in which they exercise their profession, and devise new practices to improve performance. These also represent new opportunities for managers to train their teams, to fulfill their potential and take action. In fact, one of the roles of a corporate university is to support the managers in these new approaches. It is thus with great enthusiasm that Groupama supports the GlobalCCU.

Author of The Next Generation of Corporate Universities’ and ‘The Corporate University Handbook’ tells why he believes in the importance of Corporate Responsibility as a leadership tool…

Mark Allen Pepperdine University, Los Angeles, USA

” There are a number of aspects to corporate responsibility, and in my mind, they all relate very directly to corporate universities. These concepts are leadership, ethics, and culture. Firstly, for an organization to truly demonstrate corporate responsibility, it must be an organization-wide effort. It takes great leadership to influence people throughout a large and widespread organization to demonstrate that kind of corporate responsibility. Moreover, if the push towards greater corporate responsibility involves a change, it must be organization-wide. What we are really talking about is a culture change. Since culture is people phenomenon, this is truly the province of the corporate university. The corporate university is the home for individual and organizational learning. We usually think of learning as being new information, but in fact learning (especially corporate learning) takes three forms: knowledge, skills, and attitudes. If we are trying to influence a more ethical culture and a more socially responsible one, it is going to take a change in attitude and the corporate university can be a powerful tool. I look forward to discussing these issues in greater depth at the Global Council of Corporate Universities Forum in April.

An event within the event. A wonderful experience of Paris is offered to our friends discovering the French capital: GlobalCCU Grand Dinner at the Sorbonne University on 3 April 2008 at 8:30 p.m.

An elegant GlobalCCU Grand Dinner will be held on the second evening of the forum at the historic Sorbonne University in Paris. As well as enjoying the splendour of this one oldest University in the world, which was founded in the 13th century, attendees can discuss over dinner with peers from many different countries and cultures around the world. It is an exceptional opportunity to meet our guest of honour, Mr Georg Kell, the Executive Director of the United Nations Global Compact in New York, who will preside over the evening. This convivial occasion is also open to non-participants of the 2008 GlobalCCU Forum (Academics, diplomats, civil society representatives...). However, places are limited and priority is given to 2008 GlobalCCU Forum attendees and accompanying persons. Go to the website www.globalccu.com to find out how to book your ticket or a table at this grand event. The evening is punctuated with musical interludes by the Ganymed ensemble.
